Environment Ministry creates special secretariat to fight deforestation headed by environmentalists

André Lima, former Environment Secretary of the Federal District (DF) and senior consultant on socioenvironmental policy and law at the Democracy and Sustainability Institute (IDS), will be at the head of the Extraordinary Secretariat for Deforestation Control and Land Use Planning at the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MMA), led by Marina Silva (Rede). Lima was invited by Minister Marina Silva and by the MMA’s Executive Secretary, João Paulo Capobianco, to take on the Extraordinary Secretariat created in the beginning of January.

The secretariat to be headed by the environmental lawyer will be responsible for the Department of Environmental Territorial Planning and the Department of Policies to Control Deforestation and Burning, which will be headed by Raoni Rajão, professor of environmental management at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG).
